CLUB WINS J.C. PENNEY POWER HOUR GRANT
Boys & Girls Club of Johnson City/Washington County announces receipt of a $5,000 Power Hour grant from the JC Penney After School Fund.
This $5,000 grant is one of 175 being presented by the JC Penney After School Fund to local Boys and Girls Clubs across the country. Our Club will utilize the grant money to enhance our Power Hour during the 2005-2006 school year. Power Hour serves as a homework assistance program for youngsters, ages 6-18 and is designed to motivate and improve their homework skills.
Boys & Girls Club of Johnson City/Washington County is partnered with the Penney's Store located in the Johnson City Mall. The relationship between the local Boys & Girls Clubs and JC Penny stores is designed to help support and strengthen the Power Hour Program.
Through Power Hour, "Homework Helpers", adults and qualified students, will be available to work with kids at Boys & Girls Club of Johnson City/ Washington County during after-school hours. These "Helpers" will encourage kids to set and accomplish goals, as well as communicate often with parents/guardians about their progress. Incentives and "Power Points" will be awarded for completion and high quality of homework.
The Boys & Girls Club of Johnson City/Washington County hosts "Power Hour" each day during the regular school academic year. One hour is dedicated to homework assistance, tutoring and special projects assistance. Those earning enough points each month receive special recognition, prizes and pizza parties.
According to a study by Dr. Beth Miller, Senior Research Advisor, commissioned by the Nellie Mae Education Foundation, " Students who are engaged in learning behave better in school, have better work habits, higher educational aspirations, improved attitudes towards school, a greater sense of belonging in the community, and better relationships with parents. Positive effects extend to families, employers and communities. Research indicates that investments in after school programs for youth are likely to have benefits that far outweigh the cost."
